PUBG MOBILE

4.0

Still the best core battle royale on mobile, but cheaters and a swelling file size make each new season a little harder to love completely.

Overview

PUBG MOBILE is the mobile version of PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds — the game that kicked off the modern battle royale wave. Launched February 9, 2018, it has spent eight years consistently ranking among the world’s highest-grossing and most-played mobile games, especially across Asia. More remarkably: this is the game that proved a complex shooter with real recoil and ballistics could genuinely work on a touchscreen.

The formula is famous by now: 100 players parachute onto an island, loot weapons and gear, the play zone shrinks, and the last player or team standing wins. It sounds simple, but few games recreate the pounding heart of a final circle with two squads left, no bandages, three-quarters health gone, and footsteps echoing from the house across the street.

Gameplay Highlights

PUBG MOBILE’s greatest strength is how authentic each firefight feels. Unlike rivals built around run-and-gun arcade movement, PUBG forces you to manage recoil patterns, understand bullet drop, and pick the right stock, muzzle, and fire mode for each fight. Landing a Kar98k headshot at 300 meters remains one of the most satisfying moments the genre can offer.

Erangel is still the classic map — a Soviet-era island with the infamous school-drop at Pochinki, the military bridge, and Sosnovka base — but Tencent keeps expanding the roster: the dunes of Miramar, the tight and fast tropical Sanhok, the snowscapes of Vikendi, and the more experimental Karakin. Arcade modes, EvoGround, and crossover offerings like Metro Royale rotate in alongside the standard 100-player match.

Controls are the game’s built-in weakness: PUBG MOBILE equips you with gyro aiming, auto-pickup, and fully customizable button layouts, but compared to mouse and keyboard, thumbs still lose on precision. At higher ranks, input-based matchmaking evens things out somewhat — though the gap between “playable” and “great” on mobile is much wider than on PC.

Ranked mode is where everything gets tested for real: from Bronze to Conqueror, each tier filters the field harder. The seasonal Royal Pass hands out daily rewards and is the main retention hook, though everyone knows its real value is cosmetic. Tencent keeps a steady cadence of Royale Pass seasons and balance patches, and the competitive scene remains lively across regional leagues and the PUBG Mobile Pro League.

Graphics and Sound

Visually, PUBG MOBILE offers a wide graphics ladder, from Smooth for weak phones up to HDR with full lighting, foliage, and fog effects. It won’t out-shine the newest Unreal Engine 5 mobile titles, but the optimization team’s real talent shows in Smooth mode holding 60fps on phones with just 3GB of RAM. The audio is beyond criticism: footsteps, bullets whizzing past your head, a distant engine — anyone wearing headphones gains a real informational edge, which is exactly why learning to read footsteps is a survival skill here.

Long-Term Experience

Playing PUBG MOBILE long-term means living with two faces. On one side: fast update cadence, a new season every month, and a constant stream of maps and modes means you never run out of things to do. On the other sits the decade-old unsolved problem: cheating. Aimbot, wallhack, and x-ray have never fully disappeared from high ranks, and while Tencent bans millions of accounts every quarter, running into a hacker remains a daily reality. Add a file size that has ballooned from 1.5GB at launch to nearly 10GB with all resources — not a small number for anyone on an older phone.

Verdict

If you want a mobile shooter with genuine depth, skill over luck, and a squad to roll with, PUBG MOBILE is still the top pick. But set expectations accordingly: the higher you climb, the more cheaters you meet; and the older your phone, the more each update tests your storage.

Pros

  • Outstanding optimization — runs on mid-range and even aging hardware.
  • Rock-solid battle royale core with genuinely heart-pounding final circles.
  • Constant modes and updates; you'll rarely run out of things to do.
  • Squadding up with friends is a social experience few games can match.

Cons

  • Cheating at high ranks has never been fully solved.
  • File size and device requirements bloat a little more every year.
  • Skin monetization and the Royal Pass keep pushing harder for revenue.
